Great for Alaska Customers
Credit Karma Member

I think the card is great! I just got approved for it and like the idea of a passenger fare every year as well as the bonus miles. Free checked baggage is great and 3 points for airline purchases is great! 75/year can be a drag, but it compensates with the benefits. I got approved with a 705 EQ and 724 TU. I applied using the "pre-approved" mailer and got a $5,000 CL.

You dont actually GET the bonus
Credit Karma Member

Watch the fine, teeny tiny print. If you dont spend a certain amount of money in 90 days, they throw out the bonus. Its only written in one very inconspicuous place on the application, and they dont put it in writing anywhere else at any time. They clearly dont want you to actually get the bonus and they absolutely REFUSE to honor it after purposely not giving you adequate notice.

Not worth it 7 years of ownership
Credit Karma Member

When I got the card 7 years ago they never gave me the bonus miles, it’s really one 1 mile per dollar spent because there horrible at giving you 2 miles on gas stations and stuff, overall 7 years of ownership I regret it, $95 a year just to get 1 mile per dollar spend is horrible there’s way better cards that offer the same or even better for $0 a year, the only reason this card is not a 1 star is they do offer a $95 companion fair but again if you don’t travel that year it’s a huge waste. I honestly think about canceling this card monthly but because I’ve had it so long I’m locked in, don’t be like me get a different card.

Declined with 825 credit score
Credit Karma Member

Applied and was immediately declined. I suspect it’s because I just closed my BoA checking account a couple months ago and only have one credit card with them (I haven’t received the rejection letter in the mail yet). Good riddance. I’ll just give my money to another bank that wants it.

lies and lengthy wait times
Credit Karma Member

I opened this card because (1) it said it would be available to use online right away (provided my credit was approved, which it was) (2) I had 90 days to spend $3000 in order to receive a free companion fair and 40,000 air miles. It was the beginning of July and I was planning a family trip for for September so I thought, I should have time to do that, especially since the card will be available right away. Wrong (1) The card is actually NOT available right away. It provided me a credit card number and expiration date online but I could not use them. When I called, or rather about the 3rd time a called, someone finally said - I'm not sure why it says that. They're never available right away, because of rises in online fraud we have to wait a minimum of 3-5 days to activate a new account. UGH! I needed to book my hotel right away and I wanted to charge it to the card because I needed to spend $3000 to trigger the rewards... (2) fast forward to mid August. I've now spent the required $3000 (and paid it off), and now I'm being told that it will be 2-3 billing cycles before my companion fair and air miles are available. THIS DEFEATS THE PURPOSE OF THE CARD! I called 3 times to be sure - Bank of America said to talk to Alaskan Air - Alaskan Air said I had to talk to Bank of America... when I suggested this should be more explicit up front the woman only said that it is clear, which implies I should have known better. I did read the fine print. When I looked at it again all it said is that I had 90 days to spend the $3000, it did not explicitly said it would take that full 90 days for the rewards to be available. I have a Hawaiian Airlines credit card and my miles for that card are issued as soon as I spend the money. No tricks no gimmicks. However, the miles I earn on that card are no longer worth what they once were. I just booked a trip and it took me twice as many air miles as it used to and I still paid more. Hawaiian has a range of air miles that a round trip ticket can cost but I was unable to find any tickets at any time in the year even close to the lower end of the range. All the tickets I could find cost somewhere in the upper most tiers of miles making them no longer any great discount. I don't know if there are any decent cards out there anymore. I do not recommend the Alaska Card or Bank of America, and I don't recommend the Hawaiian card either or at least be aware that the cost in air miles will be at the top of their range and NOT the bottom (which used to be available).

Do not apply for this card if you have "Fair" credit and your credit is over 720!

Pleasantly surprised
Credit Karma Member

I didn't read the reviews before applying for the card, and having done so I'm not entirely sure how I managed to be approved for it. My credit score is only fair (650). While I make a solid income nowadays, I lost all of my savings in the wake of a failed small business amidst the '08 recession, and was also unable to pay off a rather large amount of credit card charges. I couldn't get *any* variety of credit card – aside from the ones for rebuilding credit – until about 18 months ago. And yet I was just approved for an Alaska Air card with a $15K credit limit. Considering folks with nearly perfect credit have been turned down for it, I can only assume the deciding factor was the fact that I have MVP Gold elite status on Alaska. Still, I'm certainly not complaining!! VERY glad to once again have a miles-earning card, considering how much I travel (and I recently migrated from AAdvantage to Alaska Mileage Plan since Alaska joined Oneworld & they're one of the only remaining airlines that don't have a minimum annual spend to earn elite status).

DONT WASTE TOUR TIME
Credit Karma Member

Like everyone else said your immediately denied and you call and wait 40 minutes while none of Bank of America's employees know anything to be told wait for a letter in the mail! They claim they don't use credit reports but clearly they use something!

Approval hassle, great rewards
Credit Karma Member

I applied for this card with a 751 score and the online app said "pending". I had read on here about calling about a pension status. When I called I was told that the application was denied because 20 years ago when I was 18 I had a charge off with BofA. Now I have two mortgages with them and a substantial bank account history. They didn't tell me I could appeal the decision. I asked to talk with a manager and they said they'd have one call me. A week went by and I called them back. They said my app was "under review." I told them I was going to move my accounts and would never take another mortgage with them. The next day I received an approval email with a $5000 CL. I don't think telling them I was leaving had anything to do with their decision. I was later told they have access to your checking and savings account balances and review that information to make a decision email for

Lack of ability to autopay bill
Credit Karma Member

Deceptive auto-pay practice. Why would any bank intentionally have "amount due" mean the same thing as "minimum amount due," which by the way is another selectable option? Absolutely shady of Bank of America to keep billing customers finance charges by not having an option to pay the full balance due in their autopay feature.

Bank of America is trash
Credit Karma Member

i've never had a problem with Alaska Air. based in the seattle area, this card is good to get miles on everyday purchases and double/triple dipping on points with Amex platinum offers. too bad, they're partnered with Bank of America. i had this card and another thru BofA.. after a vegas trip in june, BofA closed both of my accounts with no notice. i had never missed a payment in 7 years and normally paid off balances ranging from 1k to 10k+ every month, sometimes making multiple payments. this is how BofA treats their customers. don't bother opening this card.. customer service is a joke. expect to wait 20+ minutes to get a person on the phone. and IF that happens, you get bounced around numerous times. after they closed my account, i wanted a prorated refund on my annual fee. it took 2 transfers and 42 minutes to get a refund. stick with chase or american express for your travel needs. the companion pass is a joke as others have mentioned as you're paying more that reg fare.. and you can't even purchase 1st class tickets for companion pass anymore.
