How to use Credit Karma’s mileage calculator

Knowing your gas mileage is helpful whether you’re driving for work or pleasure. Using a mileage calculator can help you figure out how much you should be reimbursed for work-related travel. It can also help you find out the cost of an upcoming road trip and understand the daily costs of driving your car.

Keep in mind that this mileage calculator only provides estimated mileage based on information you provide. Here’s what you’ll need to know.

Number of miles driven

Enter the total number of miles for the trip. This may be the distance you traveled for a work trip, the distance of an upcoming road trip or the total miles you drove in a certain period.

You can use an online map service or trip planner to determine the distance between two locations. Many cars have trip calculators (also called trip odometers), which can track the number of miles driven between point A and point B.

Amount of gas (in gallons)

Enter the amount of gas, in gallons, that your car uses on your trip. This number will vary depending on the car you drive and its fuel efficiency. Larger, heavier cars, or those with increased horsepower, tend to have a lower fuel economy, which means they travel fewer miles on a specific amount of fuel.

It’s helpful to know your car’s gas tank capacity. If your trip took less than one tank of gas, you could refill your gas tank and check the gas pump or receipt to find out how many gallons of gas needed to be refilled. If your trip takes multiple fill-ups, keep your receipts to determine gas usage.

If you’re planning an upcoming trip and don’t yet know how much gas it’ll take, you can find an estimate of the fuel efficiency of your car’s make and model at fueleconomy.gov.

Price of gas (per gallon)

Gas price is essential in determining your costs for mileage, whether you’re using the mileage calculator to get reimbursed for a business trip or tax purposes — or to calculate mileage costs for an upcoming road trip. The higher the fuel price, the more expensive your trip per mile.

Number of miles per tax year

If you plan to deduct the cost of using your car for tax purposes, you’ll need to know how many miles you drove during the tax year. Keep in mind you’ll have to meet IRS requirements and rules.

How to calculate mileage for taxes

You may be eligible to deduct car costs when filing your taxes if you use your car for business purposes. You may also be eligible to deduct your mileage for medical purposes, moving expenses or charity. You can either take the standard mileage rate or deduct your actual car expenses when you file.

To deduct these costs, you’ll first need to know how many miles you drove for the eligible purpose in the tax year. If you choose to take the standard mileage deduction, you’ll multiply total miles driven by the standard mileage rate. For 2021, the standard IRS mileage rate for business was $0.56 per mile; for charity was $0.14 cents per mile; for moving and medical expenses was $0.16 per mile.

For 2021, the standard IRS mileage rate for charity is $0.14 per mile, and the standard mileage rate for moving and medical expenses is $0.16 per mile. For 2022, the standard mileage rates are $0.58 ½  for business, $0.14 for charity, and $0.18 for medical and moving expenses.

If you qualify to deduct your actual car expenses, you’ll list the specific deductible costs of operating your car, including the car’s depreciation, as well as the cost of the lease, registration, licenses, repairs, gas and other fees. Keeping accurate records and receipts of the costs associated with using your car throughout the year can help you make the necessary calculations at tax time more easily.

How to calculate gas mileage

Your gas mileage refers to how many miles your car can drive on one gallon of gas. Knowing a car’s gas mileage can also help you understand how much it’ll cost you to drive a specific distance. The better your gas mileage, the less expensive your trip will be.

Again, your gas mileage can depend things like the kind of car you have, its size and the condition it’s in.
